How to Melt Gold Scrap

Melting gold scrap is a process that involves melting down gold items such as jewelry or coins to recover the gold they contain. Here are the steps you can follow to melt gold scrap:

Gather your materials. You will need a crucible, a torch, some borax, and a pair of tongs. You will also need some protective gear, such as safety glasses and gloves.

Clean your gold. Use a small brush to remove any dirt or debris from your gold scrap.

Heat the crucible. Place the crucible in a heat-resistant container, such as a kiln, and heat it to a temperature of around 1,100 to 1,200 degrees Celsius (2,012 to 2,192 degrees Fahrenheit).

Add the borax. Once the crucible is heated, sprinkle a small amount of borax into it. This will help to purify the gold as it melts.

Place the gold in the crucible. Use the tongs to carefully place the gold scrap in the crucible.

Melt the gold. Use the torch to heat the gold until it melts. This may take several minutes, depending on the amount of gold you are melting.

Pour the melted gold. Once the gold is fully melted, use the tongs to carefully pour it into a mold or ingot. Allow the gold to cool and solidify before handling it.

It's important to use caution when melting gold, as the process involves working with high temperatures and open flames. Make sure you have all the necessary safety equipment and follow proper safety procedures to avoid accidents.
